This piece was created in response to the Bosnian/Serbian War. I had heard an interview with a soldier and then with a mother. When the soldier was interview he explained to the reporter that it was his duty to enialate any and all remains of the people that inhabited the land by planting his seed, thus the new members would be that of his people. When the reporter interviewed a mother with two children and she was asked about the soldiers comment she said " War is cruel. I understand why they would rape me, if there is any understanding of such things,I can even understand why they would want my young pretty teen age daughter, but why my 4 year old." This question continued to reverberate to my very soul. Outraged by the soldiers comments and feeling the agony of the mother, I began to draw. Then I painted and printed several images of mankind devouring mother earth who was trying to save her young by sending it toward the light and shielding it with her sacrifice from the darkness that engulfed her. Thus this image was born.
